My photobook: The City of Bath – Enduring Structures and Transient Lives, presents a collection of high-quality photographs that explore the historic city of Bath. This project celebrates the city’s remarkably well-preserved classical architecture, capturing its timeless beauty.
Photography has long been a passion of mine. When I moved to Bath in 2012, I was immediately drawn to its elegant Georgian streetscapes, characterized by symmetry, proportion, and balance. Inspired by this architectural harmony, I embarked on a photographic journey to explore and better understand the heritage of my newly adopted home town. At the same time, I became interested in the idea of creating a photobook as the perfect medium to present my work.
Traditional architectural photography rarely includes people, aside from occasional peripheral figures to provide scale (much like an architect’s drawing). While my photobook does feature purely architectural compositions, I was keen to push the boundaries of the genre by incorporating the transient people who live, work, and socialise in Bath.
The historical structures of Bath have stood for centuries, witnessing generations of people come and go. My photobook employs photographic techniques that render people as ethereal, fleeting figures against these enduring buildings. This contrast emphasises the idea that people are merely transient custodians of the city's enduring and historic architecture. A friend, upon seeing some of my early images, remarked that these fleeting figures "breathe a sense of life into the architecture" - a sentiment that perfectly captures my vision.
An early version of my photobook was submitted to the Royal Photographic Society and was awarded an Associate Distinction. I continued refining the project, ultimately self-publishing the final edition in late 2024.
